By 1996, there were about two million landmines and unexploded explosive devices in Bosnia and Herzegovina. It is estimated that in Bosnia and Herzegovina only in the period after the war, 1,771 people were killed by mines and other unexploded ordnance, of which 621 were fatal. As of 1996, 330 of them were children. It is estimated that about 80,000 unactivated mines and explosive devices remain in BiH, which is almost 2.2% of the territory of BiH. When it comes to the number of victims of landmines, B&H is among the 15 most threatened countries.
On April 4, when the International Day of Mine Awareness and Mine Action Assistance is marked, the Government of Bosnia and Herzegovina, the United Nations and local non-governmental organizations inform the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina about the dangers posed by landmines and efforts to remove them.
Miracles Center (hereinafter referred to as MC) was created to primarily meet the prosthetic needs of people with physical disabilities, in order to provide a high standard of care and concern to every person who is a user of our services.
Since the beginning of our work in 2009, with the support of La fondation Miracles – Switzerland, H.O. Arthur McCluskey, H.O. Miracles – Great Britain, the ITF, the German Embassy, the American Embassy and a large number of private donors, we made over 1250 prostheses for mine victims, civilian victims of war, as well as for people with physical disabilities due to amputation of various causes (accidents, infections, diabetes mellitus , diseases of peripheral blood vessels, malignant tumors, congenital anomalies), provided the initial phase of rehabilitation, a large number of re-making of beds, orthoses, corrections, orthopedic insoles, but also provided psycho-social support. This collective cooperation had an impact on many lives in Bosnia and Herzegovina. By making prostheses for our patients, we simultaneously restore their dignity and the opportunity to live and work, like most of us. By helping them with a prosthetic device – we also help their families to stay strong and together!!! We help children to play carefree like their peers, go to school, have a chance for a better future, mothers to be able to take care of their children and family, to have an opportunity for employment, fathers to take care of the family, to be independent, and together we offer everyone a chance to be happy, satisfied and to regain their lost dignity.
MC is here to provide long-term immediate care and support to landmine victims and people with disabilities, regardless of age, race, religion, gender, socio-economic background or place of residence.
Unlike all other prosthetic centers in BiH, all services at MC are completely free, where priority is given to socially and economically disadvantaged persons from all over Bosnia and Herzegovina. Also, during the process of making the prosthesis, patients and their family members can use the apartments in the MC building, in order to, first of all, be present during the making of the aids, and also to avoid unnecessary travel costs.
